O'Neill's relationship with Frank Sinatra lasted three decades and produced some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of one of the most guarded entertainers in American history. Sinatra, who famously controlled his public image with an iron hand and refused access to most photographers, extended to O'Neill a trust that very few people in his life received.

The Miami Boardwalk shots of 1968 - taken during the production of Lady in Cement - show Sinatra between takes: jacket off, hat tilted, a cigarette in hand, looking out over Biscayne Bay. He is not performing for the camera. He appears to have forgotten it is there. That quality, of a man caught in an unguarded moment, is what O'Neill always sought, and what Sinatra - rarely - allowed.

"He let Terry in," said a member of Sinatra's inner circle. "He didn't let many people in."
